A Surprise Weekend in Kuala Lumpur

It feels like a lifetime ago now, but we realised we never actually wrote about our unexpected weekend in Kuala Lumpur. If you haven’t already, you can read about how we ended up on a last-minute flight to Malaysia here. After the complete madness of getting there, the debacle of finding somewhere to stay and sleeping for 21 hours we were ready to make the most of this adventure.

The weather had other ideas, as it absolutely bucketed it down for most of our first full day in KL. We ended up in the Pavilion shopping centre, a vast complex with every kind of shop, café and restaurant you could imagine. We had a feast of a lunch at a Japanese BBQ, where you ordered your meat and cooked it at the table.

After stuffing our faces, we went for a walk around the centre getting lost on multiple occasions and accidently ending up back where we started. We stumbled across a cinema and much to Ryan’s delight (and my disgust) Dune 2 was playing. Since the weather didn’t seem like it was going to change, and we didn’t have any other plans we got tickets for a showing that evening. Yes, I am a very good wife. We spent the rest of the afternoon sitting in a quiet café before enduring, I mean enjoying, the film later that night!

Lovely weather!

The next day we headed to KL Tower. We had bought tickets for the Sky Deck online, but when we got there we were told it was closed because of the weather. It wasn’t raining but apparently it was going to so we couldn’t go up. We asked if we could use our ticket to do the indoor observation deck instead but apparently that wasn’t possible. So, we weren’t really too sure what to do except hang around and hope they would open if the rain never came. We walked around the entrance for about 10 minutes and went back to ask when they would know if they were going to open and much to our delight in that time they had decided to open the Sky Deck so we headed straight up. There, we took in the 360 degree view of the city and walked out into the glass skyboxes. Ryan was very impressed with my fearlessness, as was I if I’m honest. I think the fact that you only got 45 seconds in each put me under enough pressure to just do it without thinking too much!

We then walked over to the KLCC Park which sits under the Petronas Towers. We had a little walk around the park which caters to everyone, with playparks for kids, running lanes for those so inclined and plenty of seating if you want to enjoy some peace in this busy city. We then found that there was a sky bar in the nearby Trader’s Hotel, so we went to have a look. The bar surrounds the hotel swimming pool, which was a bit strange at first, but once we had a window seat and a drink in hand nothing could phase us!

We ended up spending the rest of the day there, enjoying the drinks and the view! We stayed so long that we saw the light show at the Petronas Towers which was a nice surprise ending to our weekend in KL.

And that’s it; an unexpected, but very enjoyable weekend in Kuala Lumpur, in a nutshell! We flew back to Thailand the next morning to continue the rest of trip as planned! You can read more about that here
