A Few Words of Advice

It has been two weeks since we arrived in Thailand and in that time we have learnt a few things that we thought we would share:

  1. Crossing the road is difficult – traffic will not stop for you, even if you are using a pedestrian crossing. However, they will avoid you, so you just have to take a deep breath and go for it!
  1. Eat early or eat late – but not too late as a lot of restaurants close around 10pm if not earlier. We had this idea before we got here that it would be easy to get food at any time but so far that hasn’t been the case. Even a lot of street food stalls seem to pack up around 10pm so eating early is recommended!
  1. Food portions are deceptively large – Thai food is very filling. At home we would be inclined to have mains and sides but here, a main course each is more than enough. We have struggled to finish most of the meals we’ve had!
  1. Coconut shakes are the best – they take a coconut and turn it into a delicious, refreshing and, most importantly, hydrating drink. We can’t get enough of them!
  1. Traditional Thai businesses expect you to remove your shoes before entering – wear shoes that slip on and off easily to make this process effortless!
  1. ATMs charge 220THB for every transaction – make sure to lift money in larger amounts to avoid excess charges
  1. Everything is single ply – which is okay, unless you’re unwell so just be prepared!
  1. Don’t go outside without sun cream on – Ryan learnt this the hard way when he ended up badly burnt after 20 minutes unprotected on an overcast day in Koh Samui. Heat stroke is not fun so cover up at all times!
